It didn’t take much to get Larry Cart to Young Harris College from his hometown of Logansport, Indiana, when award-winning YHC Coach Luke Rushton recruited him via a “penny postcard.” Larry, a player described by former teammate Phil Meadows as “tremendous,” was a crucial player in the powerful team who would go on to make Mountain Lion history.
Larry had one of the greatest shots of his time, averaging 20 points per game during a time prior to the modern-day three-point line. During his freshman season, Larry compiled an impressive 564 points and helped the team place first at the State Championship in 1961. His tournament play earned him a spot on the All-Tournament team.
His sophomore year at the College proved just as successful. He was awarded “Player of the Year” in Georgia for the second consecutive year and played a vital role on the legendary 1962 Mountain Lions basketball team, which placed second in the nation.
After his outstanding career at YHC, Larry went on to play for Auburn University, where he was awarded All-American status. He began his coaching career at Douglass High School in 1968, creating impactful bonds with his players until 1973. He took the team to multiple championships until he relocated to coach at Forest Park High School in Clayton.
In recent years, Larry has made several trips to visit his alma mater and cheer on the Mountain Lions.
