Although he played during an era when there was no three-point line, Don Wade managed to average double digits during each game of his basketball collegiate career. Don came to Young Harris College after graduating from Harris County High School.
His booming personality and knowledge of the game made Don the perfect candidate for team captain, and he was elected just that his sophomore year at YHC. Don had more than leadership skills—he also had an outstanding shot, averaging around 17 points per game. It came as no surprise when he garnered a place on the National Junior College All-Tournament team in 1961 after leading the Mountain Lions to the Georgia Junior College Championship.
During his sophomore year, he was selected to the All-State Team and was also recognized as an All-American player. Following his time at Young Harris, Don went on to play for Huntingdon College, where he led the team in assists. He served as co-captain from 1961-1962, leading the Hawks to a winning 46-9 record.
Following his successful collegiate career, Don was hired as the head basketball coach at South Hall High School. Under his direction, the team held a 119-47 record and appeared in two state tournaments. He later served as Athletic Director and Assistant Head Master at Lakeview Academy until he opened his own business, Wade Tree Services—a company that would serve the area for 40 years.
Don currently resides in Gainesville with his wife of 52 years, Ruth. The couple has two daughters, Amanda and Catherine.
