Mackenzie Johnson has been named the Division II Conference Information Directors Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week ending Feb. 5.
Johnson is the first YHC women's basketball to earn national player of the week honors in the program's history and only the ninth time that a Mountain Lion had been named a national player of the week in their respective sport.
Johnson, who was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week for a fourth time this season, took things to the next level in two wins last week, averaging 24.5 points and 17.5 rebounds per game. The junior forward from Chattanooga, Tennessee, scored 23 with 19 rebounds in an 77-69 overtime win over Lander University to begin the week, then had 26 points and 16 rebounds in a 68-56 come-from-behind win over Clayton State University. Johnson scored 21 points in the second half against the Lakers as the Mountain Lions overcame a 25-point deficit, She hit 19-of-29 shots from the field (.655) and added 2.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game. She now leads the PBC in scoring (17.8) and rebounding (13.3) and is second in field-goal percentage (.504). Johnson is currently third in NCAA Division II with 15 double doubles and fourth in rebounding (13.3).
Young Harris closes out their three-game homestand at the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center Wednesday (Feb. 8) with a 5:30 p.m. PBC contest against Columbus State University.
