Late Johnson free throws propel Young Harris past No. 19 Georgia Southwestern 74-73

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Mackenzie Johnson's two free throws with five seconds left gave Young Harris College a 74-73 upset victory over No. 19-ranked Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Feb. 25) afternoon on Senior Day at the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center.

The Mountain Lions improved to 13-13 overall and to 9-9 in the Peach Belt, while the PBC regular-season champion Hurricanes fell to 21-6 and 13-5. Young Harris earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming PBC Tournament where they will face No. 3 University of South Carolina-Aiken in the quarterfinals Wednesday (March 1) in Americus, Georgia.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Mountain Lions went 2-2 this season against nationally ranked teams. Ironically both teams the Mountain Lions beat - Georgia Southwestern State and University of North Georgia - were ranked 19th in the country.
  • Seniors Johnson, Carly Winters and Kalen Surles were honored after the game.
  • Johnson finished with another double double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Surles had 18 points, seven rebounds.
  • Winters scored 14 points as she sank four three-pointers, while Dustie Obah had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
  • The Mountain Lions got off to a quick start against the Hurricanes as they opened up a 17-point lead (27-10) after a Johnson layup with 8:32 left before the half.
  • Georgia Southwestern battled back to close within two points (36-34) at the half.
  • The Hurricanes built up an eight-point lead (71-63) with 3:34 left in the game, but the Mountain Lions outscored them 11-2 to end the game. Johnson scored eight of the 11 points for YHC.
