AMERICUS, Ga. | Five players scored in double figures as No. 6 seed Young Harris College upset No. 3 seed University of South Carolina-Aiken 79-67 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Wednesday (March 1) afternoon at the Storm Dome.
The Mountain Lions improved to 14-13 and now will face No. 2 seed Clayton State University in Thursday's (March 2) 5 p.m. semifinal game. The Pacers fell to 18-11.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The win was the first-ever Peach Belt Tournament victory in three tries.
- Mackenize Johnson led the Mountain Lions with a double double as she scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Johnson now has 986 points in her career and just needs 14 more to become YHC's third 1,000-point scorer in progeam history.
- Carly Winters posted 14 points as she connected on four three-pointers.
- Kalen Surles had a double doouble of her own as she scored 12 points and collected 10 rebounds.
- Dustie Obah added 12 points, while Lilly Griffith post 10 more.
- The Mountain Lions shot 56 percent (25-of-45) from the field over the first three quarters as they built up a 21-point lead (64-43) after an old-fashioned three-point play from Johnson with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
- The game only had one lead change and featured two ties.
- YHC outrebounded the Pacers 42-34 on the glass and outscored them 36-28 in the paint.
