MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Young Harris College put together a late rally, but wasn't able to overcome a 20-point deficit as Georgia College & State University held on for 65-57 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over the Mountain Lions Wednesday (Jan. 18) evening at the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats improved to 10-7 overall and to 2-5 in the league, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-9 and 2-5. Young Harris returns to the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center Saturday (Jan. 21) after a three-game road trip where they will host the University of South Carolina-Aiken in a 1:30 p.m. PBC game.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Georgia College led 32-21 at the half and extended its lead to as many as 20 points (49-29) after a Myra Strickland three-pointer with 56 seconds left in the third quarter.
- Young Harris held the Bobcats scoreless for the next five minutes and 16 seconds as the Mountain Lions reeled off 13 unanswered points to trim the deficit to seven points (49-42) after a pair of free throws from Trinity Edwards with 6:00 left in the game. Edwards scored all six of her points during the rally.
- The Mountain Lions could only get as close as six points (63-57) after two free throws by Dustie Obah with 12 seconds to play.
- JaMari Frederick and Kalen Surles led the Mountain Lions with 13 points apiece. Surles grabbed eight rebounds, three steals and blocked two shots, while Frederick dished out six assists.
- Young Harris outrebounded Georgia College 50-37 and was led by Mackenzie Johnson who pulled down nine and Magdalene Adebanjo collected eight more.
- Obah added 10 points, while Andelin Hill accounted for nine more.
- The Mountain Lions tied their season low for turnovers with nine and held an 11-2 edge in second-chance points. YHC shot a season-low 28.6 pecent (20-of-70) from the field.
