COLUMBUS, Ga. | Mackenzie Johnson's career-high 32 points helped the Young Harris College women's basketball team pick up an 80-78 Peach Belt Conference road victory over Columbus State University Wednesday (Jan. 11) evening at the Lumpkin Center.
The Mountain Lions snapped their four-game losing streak as they improved to 6-7 overall and to 2-3 in the PBC, while the Cougars fell to 8-5 and 2-3. YHC remains on the road for a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest Saturday (Jan. 14) against Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- With the game tied at 69, the Mountain Lions took control of the game as they reeled off nine unanswered points to open up a 78-69 lead after an old-fashioned three-point play from Christina Nichols with 84 seconds remaining.
- YHC took an 80-71 lead after a Mackenzie Johnson layup with 47 seconds left, but the Cougars scored the final seven points to get as close as two points (80-78) with a second to play.
- Mackenzie Johnson, who is now eighth on the all-time YHC scoring charts with 743 points, finished with 32 points on 13-of-19 shooting from the floor and going 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Johnson's 32 points is tied for third most by a Mountain Lion in a game. YHC Athletics Hall of Famer Ladondra Johnson holds the single-game record with 34.
- Mackenzie Johnson, who is now second in the YHC record books with 638 rebounds, recorded her 11th double-double of the season as she grabbed 17 rebounds. Mackenzie Johnson trails Ladondra Johnson for the all-time record by 120 rebounds.
- Trinity Edwards (13) and JaMari Frederick (10) also finished in double figures for the Mountain Lions. Edwards nearly had a double double of her own as she pulled down nine rebounds, while Frederick dished out five assists.
- Kalen Surles added nine points, seven assists and grabbed six rebounds for YHC
- The Mountain Lions, who outrebounded the Cougars 48-31, had a 50-28 advantage in points in the paint.Â
- The 80 points scored, the 30 field goals made, the .508 field-goal percentage (30-of-59), and the 20 assists were all season highs by Young Harris. Although it wasn't a season best, the Mountain Lions went 18-of-22 (.818) from the free throw line.
