Young Harris drops 61-57 OT decision at Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Taylor Gardner led Flagler College with 15 points as they defeated Young Harris College 61-57 in overtime in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Jan. 14) afternoon at Flagler Gym.

The Saints improved to 4-12 overall and to 1-5 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-8 and 2-4. Young Harris finishes its three-game road swing with a 5:30 p.m. league game against Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, Wednesday (Jan. 18).

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Flagler led the majority of the contest after they jumped out to an early 10-point lead (12-2) with 1:47 left in the first quarter on a Maddie Erickson layup.
  • The Saints took a 33-25 lead at the half.
  • Flagler kept its advantage until midway through the fourth quarter when the Mountain Lions took their first lead at 49-48 after a Mackenzie Johnson with 4:49 remaining in regulation. The score was set up a Trinity Edwards.
  • YHC took a three-point lead at 54-51 after a putback from Kalen Surles with 2:03 to go, but the Saints forced the extra period after Sharale McCormick sank a three-point pointer with nine seconds left tio knot the score at 54.
  • The Mountain Lions took a 55-54 on a Johnson free throw 65 seconds into the overtime, Flagler got a jumper from Miracle Parker and a three-pointer from Gardner to open up a 59-55 lead with 2:05 to play.
  • YHC cut the deficit in half at 59-57 after a putback from Christina Nichols with 25 seconds remaining. 
  • Flagler secured the win with two insurance free throws over the final 14 seconds.
  • Johnson and Edwards secured double dooubles for the Mountain Lions. Johnson notched her 12th of the season as she scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Edwards had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Surles nearly notched a double double of her own as she scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards. She also collected five assists.
  • The Mountain Lions went 2-of-23 from long distance, while the Saints went 7-of-24.
