DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | A quick start proved to be the difference as the Young Harris College women's basketball team defeated Saint Leo University 68-61 Friday (Dec. 16) afternoon at the ICI Center on the campus of Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University.
The Mountain Lions improved to 5-3, while the Lions fell to 7-3. YHC wraps up its pre-holiday schedule Saturday (Dec. 17) with a 3 p.m. contest against Embry-Riddle.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Young Harris jumped out to a 17-6 lead after the opening 10 minutes. YHC hit 50 percent (8-of-16)Â of its field goals, while the Lions connected on just 1-of-9 attempts (9.1 percent).
- The Mountain Lions, who led the game wire-to-wire, extended their lead to 17 points (36-19) at the half.
- YHC took its largest lead - 19 points (38-19) - on Mackenzie Johnson's layup eight seconds into the third quarter.
- Saint Leo got as close as five points (63-58) with less than a minute left in the game.
- Young Harris' defense held Saint Leo to 32.8 percent (21-of-64) shooting from the field.
- The Mountain Lions outrebounded Saint Leo 38-35 and held an 18-9 advantage in second-chance points.
- Johnson led the Mountain Lions with another double double as she scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. She also registered five assists.
- Kalen Surles (12), Magdalene Adebanjo (11) and JaMari Frederick (10) also finished in double figures. Surles also grabbed seven rebounds, while Adebanjo had six.
