Mountain Lions lead wire-to-wire in 63-47 win over Georgia College

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Mackenzie Johnson led a balanced attack as the Young Harris College women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 63-47 Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia College Wednesday (Jan. 19) evening at the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.

The Mountain Lions improved to 11-5 overall and to 3-4 in the Peach Belt, while the Bobcats fell to 5-11 and 2-5. Young Harris travels to Aiken, South Carolina, Saturday (Jan. 22) afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest against the University of South Carolina-Aiken.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Johnson led the Mountain Lions with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Christina Nichols finished in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds.
  • Niaya White and Carly White each posted nine points, while Kalen Surles contributed eight.
  • White, Surles and Winters each tallied five assists as the Mountain Lions assisted on 20 of the 24 baskets scored.
  • Young Harris held a 43-33 edge in rebounding and outscored the Bobcats 12-6 on second-chance points.
  • YHC took the lead for good on Johnson's layup 41 seconds into the game and never trailed.
  • The Mountain Lions used an 8-0 run to open up a 20-9 lead on Lindsey Caudell's three-pointer with 2:58 left in the opening quarter.
  • YHC expanded its lead to 16 points (35-19) on Olivia Tucker's putback with 4:17 remaining before halftime.
  • The closest the Bobcats would get the remainder of the game was nine points (44-35) after an Anaya Cone stickback with 3:08 left in the third quarter, but the Mountain Lions thwarted any GC comeback as they scored the next eight points to take their largest lead of the game - 18 points (53-35) - on a Johnson steal and layup with 41 seconds left in the quarter.
