YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College baseball team cooled off the Flames of Lee University on Wednesday (Mar. 18) afternoon, rolling to a 10-4 victory behind an explosive early offensive surge.
The Mountain Lions (20-6) jumped on Lee early and never looked back, plating seven runs across the first two innings to seize control.
Jackson Morgan set the tone in the first inning, launching a two-run home run to give Young Harris a quick 2-0 lead.
The Mountain Lions broke the game open in the second inning, scoring five runs; three of which came via passed balls. Kade Smallwood added a two-run single, and Jack Enrico brought home another run on a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 7-0.
Lee responded with a two-run home run from French in the third, but Young Harris answered right back as Carlos Martans delivered a solo home run in the bottom half to push the lead to 8-2.
After Lee added a run in the fifth, the Mountain Lions tacked on two more in the sixth inning. Keypher Contreras drew a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to score a run, and Sydney Ward followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-3.
Lee added a late run in the ninth, but the outcome was never in doubt as Young Harris secured the 10-4 win.
On the mound, Drew Sofield earned the win in relief, improving to 5-0 after tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
