YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Mountain Lions volleyball team has been picked to finish 10th in the 2025 Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Preseason Poll, earning 94 points from league coaches. The ranking comes as the Mountain Lions begin a new chapter under first-year head coach Ginny Howard, who brings fresh energy and championship experience to the Enchanted Valley.

Last season, Young Harris entered the year ranked eighth and finished 6-16 overall, earning a spot in the Conference Carolinas Tournament before falling in the opening round. With eight seniors graduating, the 2025 squad returns just three seniors and features a reloaded roster full of new faces and untapped potential.

Despite the transition, the team's spirit remains strong. "Leading a team with so many new faces is both exciting and full of opportunity," said Howard. "It allows us to reset the culture, define who we want to be, and build a shared identity from the ground up."

Among the returners is junior setter Lyza Thigpen, who surpassed 1,000 career assists last season and earned All-Conference Carolinas Third Team honors. Thigpen is expected to be a key leader on and off the court.

"Coach Ginny and Coach Dani are such a blessing for this program," said Thigpen. "They push us to new levels every day. This environment is going to bring such a competitive energy to the team, especially with the newcomers."

Senior outside hitter Abby Schirm, the team's leader in kills last season, returns as the program's only four-year player. Coach Howard praised her leadership and consistency.

"Abby is stepping into a major leadership role," said Howard. "I can't wait to see how she continues to guide the team on and off the court."

The coaching staff also includes assistant coach Dani Bishop, a decorated former player and respected figure in Georgia volleyball, and Kallee McKinney, a YHC alum whose return to the program adds a meaningful connection to its roots.

"Her energy, enthusiasm, and deep passion for the game make her an incredible addition to our staff," said Howard. "Having Kallee back also represents something even bigger, a bridge to our alumni."

The 2025 schedule reflects the team's ambition and readiness to compete. Young Harris opens the season at the Bobcat Classic in Milledgeville, Georgia, followed by the Redderson Invitational at Lander University. The home opener is set for September 16 against Emmanuel University in the first-ever Roar War matchup.

Coach Howard is focused on building a culture that lasts beyond the scoreboard.

"Our focus this season is to build a strong, lasting culture of success, one that goes beyond the scoreboard," she said. "We're committed to winning on the court, excelling in the classroom, and making a positive impact in our community."

With new leadership, fresh faces across the roster, and a culture built on energy, the 2025 Young Harris College volleyball team is focused on more than just turning the page. They're ready to redefine what's possible, surpass expectations, and build a legacy of competitive excellence in the Enchanted Valley.
