Box Score GASTONIA, NC | The Mountain Lions battled through momentum swings and a mid-game rally from Belmont Abbey to pull off a gritty 6-5 gritty comeback win under the lights (May 2). After a quiet start,
Kade Smallwood opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the third before
Luke Hatcher's two-run blast in the fifth gave Young Harris a 3-0 lead. Belmont Abbey responded with a five-run sixth innings to take control, but the Mountain Lions answered right back – capped by
Carlos Martans' bunt RBI and two costly Crusaders errors that helped reclaim the lead.
Brady Caloway anchored the win with 3.2 clutch innings of scoreless relief.
YH Baseball writes their name in the next line of the bracket, and advances to the Conference Carolinas Semifinals. The Mountain Lions are set to take on Emmanuel University, who upset No. 4 North Greenville University, tomorrow at 3PM (May 3).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- After two scoreless frames, Kade Smallwood was the first to strike with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Drew Bray (1-for-3) in the third inning.
- Extending the lead 3-0 was Luke Hatcher (1-for-3), who launched a two-run home run to left center in the fifth inning.
- Belmont Abbey had a breakout inning in the sixth, but it was their only offensive action of the late evening. Things started off with a Joe Whitaker two-run home run, followed up by two RBI singles. The Crusaders jumped ahead by two, leading 5-3.
- The Mountain Lions continued to fight and took the final lead in the sixth inning. Carlos Martans (1-for-4) squared at the plate, placed down the bunt, to successfully score Mark Castle (1-for-4). One more YH run was scored on a Belmont Abbey fielding error.
- Drew Bray and Jack Enrico each recorded an extra base-hit, both with doubles.
- Brady Caloway was the star tonight for the Mountain Lions, firing 3.2 innings of relief, giving up three hits, three walks and no runs, while striking out three in the win. Caloway totaled 63 pitches in several high-leverage spots.
- Luke Hatcher finished 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
UP NEXT: Young Harris Baseball will play in the Conference Carolinas Semifinals tomorrow, May 3. The Mountain Lions are set to take on Emmanuel University at 3PM.
