Mountain Lions Battle in Regional Opener, Fall 6-3 to NGU

SALISBURY, N.C.| The Mountain Lions began their Southeast Regional Tournament against the North Greenville University Trailblazers Thursday (May 15th ) at Newman Park. The YH versus NGU matchup had a 7:00pm start after the extra inning win (9-8) from the Catawba College Indians against the Lander University Bearcats. Young Harris falls 6-3 to NGU. 

Inning 1: NGU were the first to put up points on the board, with Alton Gyselman earning 2 RBI, advancing Thomas Powell and Tristan Salinas, putting themselves up 2-0 with 2 outs. Josh Foulks was next to earn an RBI, advancing Thomas Powell and adding a point to their lead. A lineout to second base ended their momentum, putting an end to this inning. 

YH were next up to the plate, with both Drew Bray and Jeremy Begora earning a hit with no outs on the board. With a single out, Bray scored on a balk, while Begora was granted third. The Mountain Lions went down swinging to end the inning. 

Inning 2: Sam Neal began the 2nd inning for YH after an early exit for Zach Hart. NGU's Brett Blomquist recorded an extra-base hit, but Neal surrendered no runs. 

Young Harris went down one, two, three in the inning, with a few groundballs. 

Inning 3: NGU ended their turn going out swinging three at-bats in a row. 

Carols Martans got a double to start YH at bat. Jeremy Begora smacked a homer to left field and gained an RBI double, tying the game 3-3. The Mountain Lions' turn ended on a swing and a miss. 

Inning 4: Graham Edwards covered for Neal on the mound to start the inning. NGU's Payton Howard earned a base, followed by two outs. Brett Blomquist earned a hit, yet NGU's turn was retired by fielder's choice. 

Mark Castle managed to get a hit, earning first base; however, YH were retired after a pop-up in right field. 

Inning 5: NGU's Thomas Powell earned a single to left field, and Alton Gyselman walked; however, their turn was retired on a double play. 

Jackson Morgan walked with a single out, and the inning was retired on a double play. 

Inning 6: The Trailblazers went down on a one, two, three inning with no hits given up. 

NGU took notes and took the Mountain Lions out in a mirrored fashion. 

Inning 7: NGU's Brett Blomquist advanced (unearned) and Gideon Antle earned a hit. Their pursuit was cut short, going out swinging. 

Mark Castle earned a hit, followed by a strikeout. Jack Enrico then earned himself a spot on the field alongside Mark Castle, with one out on the board. NGU retired their pitcher Matty Brown for Thomas Skipper, and he closed this inning with a strikeout. 

Inning 8: NGU were retired and went out swinging with no hits earned. 

NGU took out two of our Mountain Lions, put in Matthew Taubensee in place of Thomas Skipper, and walked Kade Smallwood. YH went out swinging. 

Inning 9: NGU were walked to start with a player on base. Brady Caloway was subbed for Graham Edwards in the final inning. Gideon Antle earned a triple RBI, putting up the team 6-3. NGU were retired on a swing. 

Kyle Chatham and Jack Enrico both earned runs early in the inning. YH were then retired this inning on a pop-up, and the match ended in a 6-3 loss. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Jeremy Begora had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBIs. 

  • Mark Castle put together a reliable 2-for-4 performance, including a double. 

  • Carlos Martans contributed with a solid 1-for-3 outing, adding a double and a run scored. 

  • Young Harris totaled 9 hits, including 3 extra-base hits, showing consistent contact throughout the lineup. 

  • Sam Neal was effective in relief, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings with just 1 hit allowed. 

  • Graham Edwards provided a durable 5.1 innings on the mound, striking out 3. 

  • For North Greenville, Gideon Antle led with 3 RBIs, and Brett Blomquist was efficient at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.
