GREENVILLE, S.C. | The Mountain Lions women's tennis program is heading into postseason play with major momentum behind a pair of standout student-athletes. Freshman Maud Scholten and sophomore Futaba Saito were both recognized by Conference Carolinas for their elite performances this spring, representing a bright future and strong present for Young Harris College. Scholten was named the league's Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the Third Team All-Conference, while Saito was honored as a First Team All-Conference selection.
Scholten, a native of Den Bosch, Netherlands, delivered a sensational rookie campaign in the Enchanted Valley. Displaying impressive court awareness and composure, she posted a 12-7 singles record and went 8-2 in league play—often drawing tough assignments. Her consistent baseline play, calm under pressure, and ability to close out matches helped establish her as a reliable anchor for the team throughout the season.
Saito, a sophomore from Chita, Japan, proved to be a dominant force at the top of the Mountain Lions' lineup. She finished the year with a 15-6 overall record and went a perfect 11-0 in Conference Carolinas singles action. Known for her aggressive shot-making and ability to dictate tempo from the first serve, Saito consistently dismantled the opposition's best. Her poise and power made her one of the toughest outs in the league and a major reason for Young Harris' 6-4 conference record.
The Mountain Lions (8-14 overall) will open the Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday (Apr. 24) at 2:00 p.m. in Sumter, South Carolina.
