YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The ITA nationally-ranked Young Harris College women's tennis team turned in another strong weekend in the Enchanted Valley, sweeping Ferrum 7-0 on Friday before grinding out a 4-3 victory over Francis Marion on Saturday at the Bob and Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex.
The Mountain Lions opened the weekend with a dominant showing against Ferrum, improving to 9-4 overall with the shutout win.
Young Harris secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. Futaba Saito and Maud Scholten earned a 6-3 win at the top spot, while Lexie Gillespie and Isabella Ezeta followed with a 6-1 victory at No. 2.
In singles, the Mountain Lions swept all six courts. Scholten battled to a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 1, while Holly Ashford earned a three-set victory at No. 2, 6-7, 6-4, 10-5. Viviana Gomez dominated at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Callie Stanfield, Gillespie, and Ezeta each picked up wins by default at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 to complete the sweep.
On Saturday, Young Harris improved to 10-4 overall with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Francis Marion.
The Mountain Lions claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Saito and Scholten secured a 6-3 victory at No. 1, while Holly Ashford and Gomez delivered a 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles, Young Harris earned three key victories to clinch the match. Gomez led the way with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 4, and Stanfield followed with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5. Gillespie sealed the team win with a three-set battle at No. 6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0.
Francis Marion picked up wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 singles to account for its three points.
