YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The No. 43 Young Harris College women's tennis team delivered another strong performance at the Bob and Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Shorter University, 5-2.
The Mountain Lions set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Futaba Saito and Maud Scholten led the way at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3 win, while Tuva Asplund and Callie Stanfield earned a 6-4 victory at No. 2. Isabella Ezeta and Lexie Gillespie completed the sweep with a dominant 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Young Harris picked up four victories to clinch the match.
At the top spot, Futaba Saito delivered a standout performance in a three-set battle, bouncing back after dropping the first set to win 6-7, 6-1, 10-3. Her resilience and control helped anchor the Mountain Lions and earned her Player of the Match honors.
Viviana Gomez earned a decisive straight-set win at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Callie Stanfield followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Lexie Gillespie rounded out the scoring for Young Harris with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
Shorter picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but it was not enough to overcome the Mountain Lions' early doubles advantage and depth across the lineup.
