Mountain Lions Claim Series, Splitting with Crusaders

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College baseball team picked up another Conference Carolinas series victory on Saturday (Apr. 12) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field. After an offensive explosion on Friday night, the Mountain Lions picked up a 7-3 win in the first game of today's doubleheader, before falling to BAC 2-0 in game two.

Young Harris moves to 30-12 overall on the season and 17-7 in conference play. Belmont Abbey moved to 29-14 overall and 18-9 in conference contests.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

GAME ONE (7-3)

  • Belmont Abbey put themselves in the run column first with a solo homerun to left field in the top of the second inning.

  • The Mountain Lions took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third, with Begora, Hatcher, and Smallwood each driving in a run.

  • Connor Tucker pulled the Crusaders within one, launching a solo HR to move the score to 3-2.

  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, YH's offense came to life, pouring on four insurance runs to take a five-run lead into the final inning.

  • Todd Velotta drove in a late run for the Crusaders, but it was too little, too late, as Young Harris took game one of the doubleheader.

  • Austin Ritchie threw six strong innings for the pinstripes, earning his eighth victory of the season. Ryan Cross picked up the save, striking out three Crusaders in the final inning.

GAME TWO (0-2)

  • Belmont Abbey scored the opening run in game two, as Jack Boyles drove in a Crusader with a base knock.

  • Justin Herrera drove in the final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, as the game would feature 3.5 innings of scoreless baseball in the final stretch.

  • The Crusaders pitching staff did not give up much, as they shut out the Mountain Lions, with Ethan Wilson earning the win, and Thomas Paxton picking up the save.

  • Graham Edwards struck down eight Crusaders in 5.1 innings on the mound, surrendering just two runs.
