YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | In a match that showcased resilience, grit, and home-court heart, the Young Harris College volleyball team stormed back from a two-set deficit to defeat UNC Pembroke 3-2 (25-27, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-12) Friday evening at The Harp Recreation & Commencement Center.
Trailing 0-2 after dropping the first two sets, the Mountain Lions (8-15, 5-10 Conference Carolinas) refused to back down, igniting a comeback that electrified the crowd of 250 fans. Behind a career night from Abby Schirm, who hammered home 23 kills with a stellar .365 hitting percentage, Young Harris fought their way back into the match and ultimately sealed the victory in the fifth set.
The turning point came in the third set, where the Mountain Lions flipped the momentum with a 25-18 win, holding UNC Pembroke to a negative hitting percentage and regaining control of the match. Lyza Thigpen orchestrated the offense with 24 assists, while Lexie Martin anchored the defense with a match-high 24 digs.
Young Harris saved their best for last, hitting an impressive .478 in the fifth set with 11 kills and no errors, showcasing poise under pressure. Hannah Depp added 11 kills, and Lauren DeSilets chipped in 7 kills on a .375 clip, helping the Mountain Lions close out the match in front of their home crowd on Jimmy Buffet.
