CENTRAL, SC. The Mountain Lions take the series opener this evening (April 12th) in a conference matchup with Southern Wesleyan University. The Mountain Lions used a dominant, complete game outing from Zach Murray and an offensive explosion to propel them to victory.
QUOTING HEAD COACH STEPHEN WAGGENER:
"Great team win tonight. Zach Murray was phenomenal again. It was good to see the guys have another good game at the plate."
The Mountain Lions move to 29-9 overall and are 16-6 in Conference Carolinas. The Warriors move to 6-35 overall and are 4-18 in Conference Carolinas. YHC will return to action tomorrow (April 13th) for a doubleheader to conclude the series with Southern Wesleyan University.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Young Harris takes down Southern Wesleyan 17-2.
- The Mountain Lions started the scoring in the second inning, scoring Ethan Stamps on a Kade Smallwood hit by pitch to make it 1-0.
- James Basham would add on in the second, bringing in Marco Colina and Jack Enrico on a two RBI single to give YHC a 3-0 lead.
- Southern Wesleyan responded in the second with a solo home run by Jarrett Whitley to make it 3-1.
- Young Harris would extend the lead to 5-1 in the fourth on RBI singles from Steven Spell and Jeremy Begora to score James Basham and Drew Bray.
- A sacrifice fly from Drew Bray to score Marco Colina put YHC up 6-1 in the fifth inning.
- Jarrett Ford would follow up with an RBI single to score Kade Smallwood and give the Mountain Lions a 7-1 lead in the fifth.
- Southern Wesleyan added a run off of a throwing error in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-2.
- Jeremy Begora belted a solo home run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 8-2.
- In the seventh inning, Kade Smallwood got the scoring started with a solo home run to make the score 9-2.
- Ford would reach 1st base on a fielder's choice, scoring James Basham before later touching home by way of a Jeremy Begora RBI single.
- James Basham knocked in Jace Wilson and Mark Castle on a two RBI double before scoring on an error to give Young Harris a 14-2 lead in the eighth inning.
- Jace Wilson added two more runs for the Mountain Lions in the ninth on a two RBI double to score Sage O'Berry and Ethan Stamps.
- Basham used an RBI double to score Jace Wilson and give Young Harris a 17-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
- Zach Murray picked up his seventh win in dominant fashion, striking out eleven and only allowing two runs in nine innings of work.
