Mountain Lions sweep series from No. 8 Columbus State with 9-6 victory

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College outlasted No. 8 Columbus State University 9-6 Sunday (April 2) afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Mountain Lions swept the series with the Cougars as they improved to 25-10 overall and moved into second place in the PBC with a 15-6 mark. CSU fell to 24-9 and 11-7. Young Harris will travel to Tigerville, South Carolina, for a 6 p.m. meeting Wednesday (April 5) against No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA Division II national champion North Greenville University.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Jeremy Begora gave the Mountain Lions a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer to left field. Begora, who leads YHC with 10 homers, hit four homers in the series against the Cougars, including three three-run homers.
  • Columbus State got two runs back in the second inning, before the Mountain Lions added two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead as Ethan Underwood and Steven Spell each had an RBI single.
  • CSU tied the game at 5 with a three-run third inning, but the Mountain Lions took a 6-5 lead in their next at-bat as Jarrett Ford drove in a run with a single to right.
  • CSU tied the game at 6 in the top of the fifth, but the Mountain Lions took the lead for good at 9-6 with three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Mountain Lions scored the runs without the benefit of a hit as they took advantage of five walks and a costly fielding error by the Cougars. Drew Bray and Jace Wilson each drove in runs with bases-loaded walks.
  • Dylan Beck (2-3) earned the win with six innings of relief, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out four.
  • Young Harris had nine hits against the Cougars with Underwood, Ford and Rome Wallace having two each.
