Harris sets record in 2-0 win over Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. | McLain Harris pitched a complete-game shutout as Young Harris College defeated Georgia Southwestern State University 2-0 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday (May 1) afternoon at Hurricane Stadium.

The Mountain Lions improved to 33-16 overall and 17-10 in the Peach Belt, while the Hurricanes fell to 25-24 and 17-10. Both teams will advance to the quarterfinals of the PBC Tournament that begins Friday (May 6). Tournament pairings will be released by the PBC office.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Harris allowed just four hits and struck out 10 - despite nearly having to sir through a 90-minute rain delay in third inning - as he improved to 8-3 on the season.
  • Harris only allowed one runner to reach third and only two others to reach second base.
  • Harris, who retired 11 consecutive batters in one stretch, retired the side in order five times.
  • Harris, who holds the school record in saves with 24, became the all-time winningest pitcher in YHC's four-year era with 18.
  • The Mountain Lions, who only had five hits, pushed across two runs in the eighth inning.
  • Jackson Jones and Steven Spell started the eighth inning with singles and then moved to second and third base after a wild pitch. After Mark Castle was intentionally walked to load the bases, Aaron Copeland was hit by a pitch to give YHC a 1-0 lead. Kyle Ayers followed with an RBI ground out.
  • Spell led the Mountain Lions with two hits, while Ethan Underwood, Castle and Jones had one each. Castle had the lone extra-base hit - a double to right in the second inning - by either team.
