YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Jackson Jones,
Rome Wallace and
Aaron Copeland each drove in two runs as Young Harris College claimed a 9-5 win in game one of its Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament quarterfinal series against Flagler College on a brisk Saturday (May 7) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 34-16 as they take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series against the 24-27 Saints. First pitch for game two is 1 p.m. Sunday (May 8). If a third game is necessary, that will follow game two.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The Mountain Lions collected 14 hits as every starter in the YHC lineup had at least one.
- Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the second on Wallace's 11th home run of the season - a solo shot to left-center field.
- After Flagler scored twice in the top of the third, Young Harris broke the game up with a six-run fifth inning to open a 7-2 lead.
- The Mountain Lions started the inning by the first four hitters reaching base off Flagler starter Gage Voorhees (7-2). Jones gave YHC a 3-2 lead on his two-run double to left-center. Steven Spell added a RBI single up the middle and Copeland blasted a two-run homer - his fourth of 2022 - to left field.
- The Saints got to within 7-5 after scoring three times in the top of the sixth, but the Mountain Lions responded with two runs in their half of the frame. YHC scored on a throwing error and Wallace added a sacrifice fly to give the Mountain Lions a 9-5 lead.
- Mason Herbert (4-3) earned the win with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings, while McLain Harris quelled any thought of a Flagler rally as he retired all 10 batters he faced in his 3.1 innings of relief for his seventh save.
- Noah Fitzgerald led the hit parade with three, while Logan Worley, Ethan Underwood and Wallace collected two apiece.
