Young Harris runs past Claflin in doubleheader sweep

ORANGEBURG, S.C. | The Young Harris College baseball team swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Claflin University Saturday (April 9) afternoon at historic Mirmow Field.

The Mountain Lions took the first game 17-2 in seven innings, before claiming a 23-3 decision in the nightcap.

YHC improved to 24-12 overall and to 10-7 in the Peach Belt, while the Panthers fell to 2-19 and 0-17. The teams play the final game of the series at 2 p.m. Sunday.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • The Mountain Lions scored in every inning but the second and sixth innings.
  • YHC broke the game open with a nine-run fifth inning.
  • Marco Colina had three hits and drove in three runs to lead Young Harris.
  • Logan Worley, Noah Fitzgerald and Mark Castle each collected two hits.
  • Rome Wallace also drove in three runs, while Worley, Jackson Jones and Steven Spell had two each.
  • Worley, Wallace and Colina each recorded a double in the win.
  • Mason Herbert (2-2) earned the win as he scattered six hits and struck out five.
Game 2
  • Young Harris sent 19 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 13 runs on just four hits.
  • Every starter in the Mountain Lion lineup had at least one hit.
  • Jackson Jones hit a three-run homer and Rome Wallace followed with a long ball of his own to highlight a six-run second inning. It was Jones' team leading ninth homer of the season, while it was the sixth for Wallace.
  • Aaron Copeland added a three-run pinch-hit homer in the fifth inning to close out the scoring.
  • Colina led the Mountain Lions with three hits, while Ethan Underwood, Fitzgerald, Jones, and Castle had two hits each.
  • Jones drove in four runs, while Copeland, Castle and Kyle Ayers had three each. Colina and Wallace tallied two RBI apiece.
  • Nate Lamb (4-3) struck out nine over six innings for the win.
