Mountain Lions scores school-record 31 runs in win over Claflin

ORANGEBURG, S.C. | The Young Harris College baseball team set a program-record (NCAA era) with 31 runs in a 31-13 Peach Belt Conference victory in seven innings over Claflin University Sunday (April 10) afternoonn at historic Mirmow Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 25-12 overall and to 11-7 with the series sweep over the Panthers, who fell to 2-20 and 0-18. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (April 12) at 3 p.m. when they travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee, to face Carson-Newman University,

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The 31 runs were the most in the program's NCAA era, surpassing the 24 runs scored against Francis Marion University (2013 and 2020) and Mars Hill University (2021).
  • Every starter for the Mountain Lions collected at least one hit as YHC banged out 20 hits.,
  • YHC scored in every inning, but the fifth. The Mountain Lions scored nine times in the fourth and pushed across seven runs in both the second and seventh innings.
  • The seven doubles by the Mountain Lions was one shy of the program record of eight set against Brevard College in 2013. Kyle Ayers had three, while Ethan Underwood had two. Aaron Copeland and Steven Spell had one apiece.
  • Underwood led the Mountain Lions with four hits and Ayers added three more. Logan Worley, Rome Wallace, Copeland, Mark Castle and Spell had two each. 
  • Castle hit two homers in the game as he drove in five runs. Castle now has five homers for the season.
  • Wallace connected on his third homer in as many games as he drove in three. Wallace has launched seven long balls this season.
  • Spell added a home run - his second of the campaign - as he drove in three runs.
  • Noah Fitzgerald drove in four runs, while Jackson Jones pushed across three more. Underwood and Dawson Barnes had 2 RBI each.
  • Dylan Beck (4-0) earned the win as he struck out nine in five innings.
