Noah Fitzgerald, and
Steven Spell each collected four hits as Young Harris College pounded out a season-high 23 hits in a 19-7 non-conference baseball victory over Carson-Newman University Tuesday (April 12) afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.
The Mountain Lions won their fifth consecutive game as they improved to 26-12, while the Eagles dipped to 24-18. YHC returns to Peach Belt Conference action Thursday (Aprol 14) with a 6 p.m. contest against the University of South Carolina-Aiken at Zell B. Miller Field.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- After Carson-Newman jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, the Mountain Lions tied the game at 2 in the second. Mark Castle had an RBI double down the left field line, while Spell drove in the other on a single back up the middle.
- Young Harris took the lead for good an inning later on the first of two two-run home runs by Jackson Jones. The long ball to right-center field gave YHC a 4-2 lead.
- Carson-Newman got an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to pull within a run at 4-3, but Jones' second two-run home run in the fifth highlighted at seven-run fifth inning. It was Jones' team-leading 11th homer of the season.Â
- YHC took advantage of two errors in the fifth to score the seven runs. Ethan Underwood had a sacrifice bunt with the bases loaded in the inning.
- The Mountain Lions added three more runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth.
- Spell and Kyle Ayers added back-to-back walks with the bases loaded in the eighth, while Worley added a sacrifice fly.
- Castle started the ninth with a two-run single to right, while Spell added a RBI double to right-center field, Worley drove in the final run on a single to left.
- Jones drove in four runs, while Spell and Castle had three RBI each. Worley added two more.
- Marco Colina and Castle each had three hits, while Jones and Rome Wallace had two apiece.
- All but one starter in the YHC lineup had at least one hit.
