YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Rome Wallace hit a walk-off three-run homer in the ninth to give the Young Harris College baseball team a 6-4 Peach Belt Conference victory over Lander University in game one of the series Friday (April 22) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 30-14 overall and 14-8 in the Peach Belt Conference, while the Bearcats fell to 20-23 and 9-12. Young Harris and Lander return to action Saturday (April 23) with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Wallace's walk-off home run was the second consecutive walk-off win for YHC at home.
- Kyle Ayers and Wallace led the Mountain Lions with three hits, while Logan Worley, Jackson Jones, Mark Castle, and Marco Colina each connected on one.
- The game was scoreless until the Bearcats put up a run in the third and held the 1-0 lead through the fifth. Lander added three more in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.
- The YHC offense was quiet until the Mountain Lions rallied in the eighth after Jones gave YHC its first run off a solo home run to deep right - his 12th of the season.
- Steven Spell drew a walk, followed by a Colina infield single to give YHC two base runners. Ayers lined a triple to center field to cut the Bobcat lead to one run 4-3 in the eighth.
- Underwood battled for a walk to lead off the ninth and Noah Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch, before Wallace hit the game-winning homer to left field.
- Mason Herbert pitched six innings and held Lander to two earned runs, while Ryan Inches followed with two shutout innings in relief.
- McLain Harris (7-3) earned the win with the scoreless top of the ninth, and tied the career-record for total wins with 17 at Young Harris. He is currently tied with Adam Moore, who played for the Mountain Lions from 2011-14.
