MARS HILL, N.C. | The Young Harris College baseball team scored 16 runs in their final two at-bats for an 18-4 comeback win over Mars Hill University in Tuesday (March 29) afternoon's contest at Henderson Field.
Young Harris , which scored 10 runs in the eighth and six more in the ninth inning, improved to 21-9, while Mars Hill fell to 14-17. The Mountain Lions return to action Friday (April 1) with a 6 p.m. first pitch in the Battle of Blood Mountain against their Blood Mountain rivals University of North Georgia at Zell B. Miller Field.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The Lions got four hits in the bottom of the first to get a 3-0 lead.
- The score remained 3-0 through the sixth inning until a Rome Wallace single scored Noah Fitzgerald to give the Mountain Lions its first run of the game. Marco Colina added another run off a single up the middle that scored Wallace to bring the score to 3-2.
- MHU added a run in the seventh to grab a two-run lead (4-2), but YHC answered with a 10-run eighth to score all the runs it would need to get the victory.
- Wallace and Fitzgerald each had a solo home run to left field in the electric inning.
- Ethan Underwood connected on two hits in the 10-run eighth, including a single to lead off the inning and a RBI double. Fitzgerald added two hits, while Jackson Jones, Logan Worley and Jackson Kemp each had one.
- Kemp and Steven Spell added back-to-back home runs in the ninth to give YHC the 14-4 lead.
- Jones and Wallace continued the six-run ninth with back-to-back RBI singles to pile on two runs and give YHC a 16-4 lead.
- Colina added the final YHC runs off a double to the right center gap that gave the Mountain Lions the 18-4 victory.
- YHC connected on 20 hits. Underwood, Wallace, and Kemp led with three, while Jones, Fitzgerald, Colina, Spell, and Worley had two apiece, and Kyle Ayers had one.
- The 20 hits and 18 runs scored are season highs for the Mountain Lions.
- Chad Brown (1-2) earned the win for YHC. Brown pitched four innings, allowed three hits, and struck out two batters faced.
