DAHLONEGA, Ga. | Carissa Spiker and
Niaya White combined for 25 points, but it wasn''t enough as Young Harris College fell to No. 9 University of North Georgia 73-63 in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Wednesday (March 2) evening at the UNG Convocation Center.
The Nighthawks, who are the No. 1 seed in the tournament, improved to 23-3, while the No. 8-seeded Mountain Lions ended their season at 13-15. YHC was making their second-ever appearance in the PBC Tournament.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Spiker led the Mountain Lions with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor (4-of-6 from three-point range).
- White added 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and added six rebounds.
- Mackenzie Johnson nearly had a double double with nine points and nine rebounds.
- Carly Winters and Dashaun Jackson each added eight points for the Mountain Lions.
- Young Harris got off to a quick start as they took a 15-9 lead after Winters connected on a three-pointer with 4:17 left in the first quarter, but the Nighthawks took a 28-23 lead at end of the first 10 minutes.
- UNG, which led by 15 at the half (45-30), extended its lead to as many as 22 points (56-34) midway through the third quarter.
- The Mountain Lions battled back and trimmed the deficit down to nine points (68-59) after Spiker sank a three-pointer with 3:28 remaining in the game, but that was as close as YHC would get.
