Saints down No. 20 Mountain Lions twice

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Flagler College swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from No. 20 Young Harris College Saturday (March 19) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Saints rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to take the opener 5-4, before turning six YHC errors into seven unearned runs in the nightcap to hold on for a 9-7 decsiion.

Flagler improved to 14-10 overall and to 7-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to 17-7 anf 6-2. The teams will wrap up their weekend series with a noon contest Sunday (March 20).

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • After Flagler scored three runs in the top of the second, the Mountain Lions responded with two runs in their half of the inning. Rome Wallace drove a run with single down the left field line and the other came off a double play.
  • The Mountain Lions tied the game at 3 in the sixth. Ethan Underwood started the two-out rally with a walk and scored on Noah Fitzgerald's triple into the right field corner.
  • YHC took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kyle Ayers led off with a double to left-center field and came around on a RBI single by Marco Colina to center.
  • Flagler won the game in the top of the ninth as they scored twice off reliever McLain Harris (4-1).
  • Fitzgerald and Worley led the Mountain Lions with two hits apiece.

Game 2
  • Flagler scored four unearned runs in the top of the first as they took advantage of two YHC errors.
  • The Mountain Lions got two runs back in their half of the frame as Jackson Jones stroked a two-run, two-out single to right field.
  • The Saints added another unearned run in the second and Young Harris added a run on Mark Castle's RBI single to center field to give Flagler a 5-3 lead. 
  • Young Harris responded with four euns in the bottom of the third to open a 7-5 lead.  After Fitzgerald led off with a single, Jones followed with a two-run homer to left that tied the game at 5. After a Wallace single, Kyle Ayers connected on a two-run homer to left field. 
  • Flagler tied the game with two runs in the fourth and took a 9-7 lead on two more runs an inning later.
  • Travis Burnette (3-1) took the loss. He scattered seven hits and allowed seven runs (one earned).
  • Castle led YHC with three hits, while Underwood and Jones each had two. Jones drove in four runs.
