YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The 26th-ranked Young Harris College baseball team swept Union (Tenn.) University 4-3 and 3-2 in a Saturday (Feb. 5) afternoon doubleheader at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-0, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-3. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Feb. 12) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Mississippi College.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
GAME 1:
- Nate Lamb started game one for the Mountain Lions. Lamb allowed one hit out of 16 batters faced and struck out six.
- Brody Meeks (1-0) recorded the win, while McLain Harris earned the save for Young Harris as he struck out four.
- Kyle Ayers led off the fourth inning with a walk and scored off an Ethan Underwood single through the right side to give the Mountain Lions their first run of the night.
- YHC took a 3-1 lead in the fifth as Logan Worley drove in the first run before Jackson Jones doubled to right-center field to score the other run.
- After Blake Barrett's two-run homer tied the game at 3 in the top of the sixth, Noah Fitzgerald led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. He later scored on a wild pitch to give the Mountain Lions the lead for good at 4-3.
- Worley, Jones, and Underwood carried the Young Harris offense with one RBI each. Underwood was 2-for-4 at the plate.
- The Mountain Lions had six stolen bases in the game.
GAME 2:
- Travis Burnette (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Mountain Lions. Burnette pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball and struck out four.
- YHC tied the game at 1 in the second. Underwood started the rally with reaching base after being hit with a pitch and moved to third on a single through the right side by Rome Wallace. Jackson Kemp drove in Underwood with a sacrifice fly to left field.
- Fitzgerald's two-run double to left-center field in the third inning gave YHC a 3-1 lead. Ayers and Worley started the inning with back-to-back walks and scored on the play.
- Young Harris totaled five hits; including two from Wallace, and one each for Brandon Jolliff, Fitzgerald and Jackson Jones.
