YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The 26th-ranked Young Harris College baseball team opened their 2022 campaign with a 7-0 victory over Union (Tenn.) University Friday (Feb. 4) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-1. The two teams wrap up their three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 5).
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The tandem of Chad Brown and Cole Edwards combined a two-hit shutout. Brown struck out five and allowed one hit in 4.2 innings, while Edwards (1-0), who picked the victory in relief, strick out four and allowed one hit. They only allowed three Union batters to reach second base.
- The Mountain Lions got all the offense they would need in the fifth off Union starter Walker Adkisson (0-1). Ethan Underwood led off with a double to left-center field and would score on Rome Wallace's two-base sacrifice fly to warning track in left-center.
- YHC added three runs in the sixth. Kyle Ayers, who started the inning with a walk, scored on a wild pitch. Noah Fitzgerald added a two-run homer to left field. Jackson Jones scored on the play after reaching on a double to left.
- Mark Castle walked and Logan Worley singled to center in the seventh inning before Jones smacked a three-run homer to right field to give the Mountain Lions a 7-0 lead.Â
- The Mountain Lions tallied nine hits, including two each from Jones, Fitzgerald and Underwood.
