YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College scored the final three goals - including the game-winner from
Ruthie Mandell with 4:30 remaining - to rally for an 18-17 women's lacrosse victory over Barton College on a soggy Sunday (Feb. 27) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 2-6, while the Bulldogs slipped to 1-3. Young Harris opens up Gulf South Conference action Wednesday (March 2) with a 4 p.m. match against Shorter University in Rome, Georgia.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Barton opened up its largest lead of the game - four goals (14-10) - after the Bulldogs started the third quarter with three unanswered goals.
- The Mountain Lions responded with three goals (Taylor Greenberg, Emily Flynt and Ella Hancock) in a three-minute stretch to pull within a goal at 14-13 with 3:15 left in the third quarter.
- The Bulldogs took a 17-15 lead with 7:07 left in the match on a Jayden Smith, but that would be the last Barton goal as the Mountain Lions tightened up the defense.
- Kinsley Purser and Greenberg scored back-to-back goals in a 45-second span to tie the game at 17.
- After Barton won the ensuing draw control, Hancock forced a turnover and Greenberg pick up a the ground ball. After the Bulldogs had a player sent off with a yellow card, the Mountain Lions scored a man-up goal 13 seconds later from Mandell.
- Greenberg led the Mountain Lion attack with five goals, while Purser had three. Hancock and Morgan Lewis found the back of the net twice, while Parker Vaughan, Ally Cattoni, Ashlyn Fraley and Flynt.
- Hancock distributed five assists, while Felisse Richard had two. Lewis, Purser and Vaughan registered an assist.
- The Mountain Lions won 19 draw controls with Purser leading the way with a career-high 10. The 10 draw controls by Purser was the fifth-most in a game in program history. Hancock had four, while Greenberg and Richard had two each.
- Greenberg scooped up seven ground balls, while Hancock had five and Suzanne Moore posted three.
- Rachel Robb (6) and Maddy Meyers (3) combined for nine stops in the YHC goal.
