YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College women's volleyball coach
Jenny Michael has announced six commitments - Sophie Bearden, Lily Hidalgo, Haley King, Gray Miller, Lorin Tidick and Chase Vaigneur - for the 2021 fall season.
"Our 2021 class is off to a fantastic start," said Michael. " First and foremost, all six of these young ladies exhibit the character and values that we are building our program on. What they will contribute additionally with their athleticism and volleyball knowledge is icing on the cake."
Bearden, a 6-foot-3 middle hitter from Alabaster, Alabama, played volleyball for three seasons at Thompson High School for coach Judy Green. She amassed 313 kills and 119 total blocks (29 solo and 90 assist) in the past two seasons at Thompson. During that time, the Warriors competed in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 7A state tournament twice. They advanced to the elite eight in 2019 before reaching the final four in 2020.
Hidalgo, a 5-10 outside hitter from St. Simons Island, Georgia, played volleyball for three seasons at Glynn Academy for coach Emily Wylie. She was twice named to the all-region team and the Volleyball Player of the Year by the Brunswick News. Hildago was named the Region 2-6A Player of the Year in 2020. Hildago helped lead the Terrors to back-to-back region titles in 2018 and 2019. Glynn Academy reached the elite eight of the 2018 Georgia High School Association Class 6A state tournament. Hildago also played club for the Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association.
King, a 6-1 middle blocker/outside hitter from Lakeland, Georgia. played volleyball at Highland Christian Academy for coach Jessica Phillips. King was named a Georgia Association Private & Parochial Schools All-Star team as she recorded 118 kills, 63 total blocks (55 were solo), 66 digs and 44 service aces. She was named an honorable mention all-region selection in 2019 and twice was named her team's most improved player. King also played club for the Jacksonville Juniors and PSVA.
Miller, a 5-7 outside hitter/defensive specialist from Jacksonville, Florida, played volleyball at Providence School for Jon Pennington. Miller was named the team's MVP in 2019 and 2020 as she tallied 429 kills, 373 digs and 71 service aces. The Stallions advanced to the final four of the 2017 Florida High School Athletic Association Class 3A state tournament. Miller also played club for the OTVA.
Tidick, a 5-10 right side/outside hitter from Statesboro, Georgia, played volleyball for four seasons at Statesboro High School for coach Bob Massie. Tidick was twice named to the all-region team. She was named to the second team in 2019 and was first-team selection in 2020. The Blue Devils advanced to the GHSA Class 6A state tournament twice, reaching the elite eight in 2018. She also played club for the Beaufort Select Club.
Vaigneur, a 5-8 outside hitter from Beaufort, South Carolina, played volleyball for four seasons at Beaufort Academy for coach Jessica Young. During her time as an Eagle, she registered 813 kills, 681 dogs, 464 assists, 209 service aces and 23 solo blocks as Beaufort Academy captured the 2019 South Carolina Independent School Association Class A State Championship. Vaigneur was named to the All-State team and to the SCISA 2A Region Player of the Year in 2020. She has been named to the all-region team three times and was named the team captain in 2020. Vaigneur played six seasons with the Beaufort Select Volleyball Club where she was named to the All-Palmetto Team four times. Vaigneur also played basketball and softball for two seasons at Beaufort Academy. She also helped the Eagles capture a SCISA Class A state title in basketball.
Young Harris will open their abbreviated inaugural season March 9 when they host Lander University in a 7 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match at the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.
