Top-seeded Young Harris College women's lacrosse captured the program's first-ever Conference Carolinas Championship title with a 13-11 victory over the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on April 25.
Championship Game:Â Young Harris 13, Belmont Abbey 11
Belmont Abbey jumped out to a fast start, scoring the first two goals and eventually building a 6-2 lead late in the first quarter. Young Harris answered with a late goal from Riley Parker to close the opening frame down 6-2.
The Mountain Lions surged in the second quarter, opening with three straight goals from Erika Baalam and Riley Parker (2) to cut the deficit to 6-5. The Crusaders responded with a 3-0 run to extend the lead to 9-5 before Sydney Craig scored back-to-back free-position goals to bring Young Harris within 9-7. A late Belmont Abbey goal gave the Crusaders a 10-7 advantage at halftime.
Young Harris flipped the game in the third quarter.
The Mountain Lion defense held Belmont Abbey scoreless in the period while Parker, Addison Heiser, and Megan Magill each found the back of the net to even the score at 10-10 heading into the fourth.
Heiser gave Young Harris its first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter on a free-position goal assisted by Parker. After Belmont Abbey answered to tie the game at 11-11, Heiser delivered back-to-back goals with 6:10 and 2:47 remaining to secure the 13-11 championship victory.
