A Strong Finish: Mountain Lions Close Season in Salisbury

SALISBURY, N.C.| The Mountain Lions began their second game in the Southeast Regional Tournament against the Lander University Bearcats Friday afternoon (May 16th ) at Newman Park. Young Harris was edged out by Lander 13-8.  

Inning 1: YH was first at the plate; Luke Hatcher and Kade Smallwood were granted a spot on the base paths with a walk. The Mountain Lions were retired on a pop up. 

Lander's Evan Wickeri tallied an RBI single putting the Bearcats up 1-0. Conner Droze and Garrett Chun followed suit, each with an RBI single, adding to the board putting them up 3-0. Lander was retired on a pop up. 

Inning 2: Jackson Morgan started the inning off with a homer to left field putting the Mountain Lions on the board 3-1. Young Harris' turn was retired on a ground out to 2nd . 

Lander's Cooper Backman took notes from Morgan and homered, widening the gap, 4-1. The Bearcats retired on a pop up. 

Inning 3: Kade Smallwood walked, and the Mountain Lions' turn had an early stop on a swing and a miss. 

Austin Ritchie retired from the mound after taking out two Lander batters, with Matthew Pearce. The Bearcat Adam Love homered putting up Lander 5-1. Lander University retired on a pop up. 

Inning 4: Carlos Martans earned an RBI single putting the Mountain Lions up 5-2. Jeremy Begora gained an RBI double shrinking the gap by only one run (5-4). Luke Hatcher sealed the gap and more with a homerun and an RBI double putting YH up 6-5. 

The Bearcats' Zach Cowart earned a hit, yet their turn was retired on a swing and a miss. 

Inning 5: YH is out on a one, two, three inning. 

Lander is retired in a similar fashion. 

Inning 6: Jack Enrico began this inning with a homerun advancing the Mountain Lions 7-5. Lander retired their pitcher Jagger Jefferis for Joshua Sanchez. YH is then retired on a pop up. 

Zach Cowart earned an RBI single in favor of Lander, closing the gap to 7-6. The Mountain Lions retired pitcher Ryan Cross for Matthew Pearce. Evan Wickeri earns and RBI single advancing his teammate for a tied 7-7 game. The Bearcats are then retired on a ground out to 2nd . 

Inning 7: Jack Enrico earned an RBI single breaking the tie 8-7. YH's turn is over by a pop up. 

Lander's Adam Love hammered a home run for a RBI double going up 8-9. Evan Wickeri widened their advance by three with an RBI triple making the score now 8-12. Grant Sherrod earned an RBI single with the board now leading 8-13. The Bearcats' streak soon ended with a swing and a miss. 

Inning 8: The Mountain Lions were retired on a one, two, three inning. 

Adam Love earned a hit and secured a base for Lander. The Bearcats eventually retired on a fly out. 

Inning 9: YH retired on a one, two, three inning.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Jeremy Begora led the offense with a solid 2-for-4 performance, including a double, 2 RBIs, and a walk. 

  • Jack Enrico stayed locked in at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, 2 RBIs, and a walk. 

  • Jackson Morgan brought power with a home run, driving in a run and scoring twice. 

  • Luke Hatcher added to the fireworks with a solo homer and 2 RBIs. 

  • Carlos Martans contributed with a double and an RBI to keep Young Harris competitive. 

  • Kade Smallwood showed great plate discipline, drawing 4 walks and scoring a run. 

  • Despite the loss, Jacob Autry pitched a scoreless final inning, holding Lander off the board. 

  • Lander's offense was led by Evan Wickeri (3 hits, 5 RBIs) and Adam Love (4 hits, 2 home runs, 3 RBIs), who made the difference in a high-scoring game.
