GREENVILLE, S.C. | Young Harris College senior midfielder Shania Harris has been named the Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after her four-goal (haul) performance against conference opponent Erskine College.
"Incredibly proud of Shania's performance this past week," YHC Head Women's Soccer Coach Avram Allen said. "We needed someone to step up as a goal scorer, and Shania has accepted the challenge in a big time way! She is really in form at the moment and at the right time during our season. I hope to see Shania continue to play in rhythm as conference play ramps up."
Shania Harris is the first Mountain Lion to earn the Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Week award since Alexis Scarpinato won it just over a year ago.
Harris played in just the lone match against Erskine last week, with the hurricane weather leading to Saturday's match against Barton College being cancelled.
Shania Harris got the party started on Tuesday (Sept. 24), scoring the first goal on a penalty kick just over 17 minutes into the match. Harris kept the party going, with another goal in the 24th minute to put YHC ahead, 2-0; Shania beat a defender and went one-on-one with the Flying Fleet goalkeeper, firing the shot by her and into the right side of the net.
That was not all she wrote for Shania Harris and the Mountain Lions, as the match progressed, Young Harris took a 4-1 lead into the half. Harris came out firing in the second half, with excellent ball control, Shania earned the hat-trick; dribbling the ball around a couple of Erskine players before firing another shot that found the back of the net.
Harris was not content with the hat-trick, or the Mountain Lions newfound four goal lead. Just over four minutes after her third goal of the game, Harris received a great feed from Vic Shanahan, toyed with a few Flying Fleet defenders, before firing another flawless shot from the top of the box to complete the haul (4 goals in one game). The game was called off due to weather conditions with just over 15 minutes remaining, who knows what could have happened in that final fifteen?
With four goals and an assist in just 47 minutes of playing time, Shania Harris etched her name into the Young Harris College record books, with the most goals (4) and points (9) in a single match in YHC women's soccer program history.
