Mountain Lions Out of Conference Tournament after 8-2 loss to Erskine

Gastonia, NC| The Young Harris College baseball team had an incredible 2024 run, but Conference Carolinas is a tough place to play, especially when the Championship rolls around. The Mountain Lions lost their first tournament game, won their second to stay alive, but could not stay in front of the Flying Fleet on Saturday (May 4) afternoon as the game winded down, losing 8-2.

QUOTING HEAD COACH STEPHEN WAGGENER:
"Today was a disappointing day. We really struggled to string together at bats consecutively. All of our production was spread out and Erskine did a great job of limiting free bases. Zach Hart was outstanding and really disappointed we didn't do more offensively with the outing he gave us."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Mountain Lions led 2-0 through five innings of baseball, with an RBI single coming from Jack Enrico, and a solo HR into right field by Kade Smallwood

  • The Flying Fleet scored eight unanswered runs from the top of the sixth and onward. David Hernandez tied up the game in the sixth with a 2 RBI double.

  • In the seventh, Erskine took a one run lead on a solo home run by Daniel Hernandez.

  • Erskine put up five runs in the ninth to bolster their lead to 8-2. Carlos Gonzalez (2 RBIs), Ben Maskin (2 RBIs), and Josean Sanchez (RBI) each added on for Erskine.

  • Zach Hart had a great outing for YHC, totaling seven innings on the mound, three runs (1 ER), and three strikeouts, but was awarded the loss.

  • Jared Guell earned the win for Erskine, surrendering two hits, while picking up four K's, and giving up no runs in relief.

ON DECK:
The Mountain Lions will play in Regionals in mid-May.
