Mountain Lions Disarm the Flying Fleet on Military Appreciation Day, 96-68

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Erskine College Flying Fleet ventured over to The Harp this afternoon to battle the Mountain Lions of Young Harris College. The barrage of three-point attempts from the Flying Fleet's offense proved to be no match for the Mountain Lions' top-ranking defense. The Mountain Lions improved their season record to 6-3 overall, 3-1 in Conference Carolinas, and a perfect 4-0 in home games. Erskine College fell to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JEREMY CURRIER:
"The big thing defensively was to take away the three point shot. They came in taking more three's than anyone in the country; they made eight in the first half and only three two point field goals. I thought our guys did a really good job adjusting and getting out to shooters better and I thought we played a little faster. Our pace was better and 23 assists is our season high, and I am really happy with the unselfishness. Four guys in double-figures, that is how we should play every game offensively." Continuing, "I thought they played with good spirit today, good joy, and it is good to see them celebrate each others success. I think when we play together, and we trust each other, and trust the pass, we have a special group. They want to win, they work really hard, and I am really excited with how they responded because we played poorly in the second half at Emmanuel. It speaks to the character of the guys in that locker room."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Field general Kolbe Ashe led the Mountain Lions high octane offensive assault with six assists and nine points.

  • The top scorers for YH were Karl Chavis (20) and Justin Payne (17); Chavis went 2-2 from long range and 8-8 from the charity stripe, while Payne added four rebounds and one block.

  • The Mountain Lions defense was suffocating, as Erskine shot just 32.8% (22-67) from the field.

  • The onslaught of three-point attempts from the Flying Fleet was neutralized by the YHC line of defense, as Erskine finished the game with just a 26% success rate from beyond the arc.

  • On the other hand, Young Harris shot 59.2% (29-49) from the field and an impressive 60% (15-25) from downtown.

  • Grant Lovette, Zion Brown, Max Peeler, and Malik Shepherd all finished the game with nine points on the Erskine side.

  • Young Harris scored 22 points in the paint, 62 bench points, and outrebounded Erskine, 37-21, in route to a 28-point victory.
