Young Harris Falls 3-0 in Setback to Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. | Young Harris College lost 3-0 to Southern Wesleyan on Friday afternoon. Southern Wesleyan held off YHC's comeback in the first set for the 25-20 victory and took the next two sets and the match.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JENNY MICHAEL:
"We've been struggling with consistency all season thus far and we're not playing the game very cleanly right now; clean referring to minimal errors. Seems like we need to either get it together and play clean, or learn how to play ugly better than we have been."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Southern Wesleyan scored nine of the first twelve points to take the early lead. Service aces from Lyza Thigpen and Joha Bernis book ended a five-point run for the Mountain Lions. YHC clawed back, bringing it within two, 22-20. Gracie Wilson had consecutive kills for the Warriors to close out the set and go up 1-0.

The Warriors continued their momentum and won set two 25-13. Southern Wesleyan wrapped up the set with 17 kills and benefited from seven Mountain Lion errors to take the set and the 2-0 advantage.

The Mountain Lions fought hard in the final set. Alexa Berry, Abby Schirm, and Kathryn Urbanek all scored early to put Young Harris up 5-2. Back-to-back kills from Kathryn Urbanek and Lauren DeSilets extended YHC's lead to 14-12. Southern Wesleyan battled back to go ahead 18-17. Kills from Karson Haley, Gracie Wilson, and Michaela Andress, and Gracie Wilson secured the 25-18 set victory and the match for Southern Wesleyan.  

NOTABLE STATS:
  • Abby Schirm led the Mountain Lions with eight kills and Lyza Thigpen had 26 assists.
  • The Warriors had 14 blocks in the match, led by Trinity Gibson with two.
  • Young Harris hit .087 compared to Southern Wesleyan's .252 hitting percentage.
