YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Columbus State University wrapped up a share of the Peach Belt Conference softball regular season championship as they held off a furious Young Harris College rally to take an 8-7 win Sunday (April 23) afternoon at the YHC Softball Field.
The 24th-ranked Cougars improved to 41-12 overall and to 24-3 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 18-29 and 10-17. Both teams have qualified for next weekend's conference tournament and will await the release of bracket by the conference office Tuesday (April 25) evening.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The Mountain Lions tied the game at 1 in the second inning on Gracie Hughes' leadoff homer just inside the left field fair pole. It was Hughes' fifth homer of 2023.
- CSU broke the game open with a five-run third inning, highlighted by Hannah Rose Corbin's three-run homer to left.
- YHC got a run back in the fifth on Grace Young's sacrifice fly after Bailee Brown tripled to left-center field.
- Columbus State scored two more times in the top of the sixth to open up an 8-2 lead.
- Young Harris started the comeback with a three-run sixth inning. Erin Chambliss drove in two runs with her two-run triple to right field and Amber Devine followed with an RBI triple of her own.
- The Mountain Lions rallied for two more runs in the seventh. Young started the inning with a single up the middle before Hannah Carey walked. Hughes knocked in the first run on a single through the right side. Trinity Aycock had an RBI ground out to pull the Mountain Lions within a run at 8-7.
- With the tying run in scoring position, Corbin, who earned her first save, got the final out on a strikeout.
- Kylie Ferguson (7-15) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
- YHC had eight hits in the game with Young and Hughes each collecting two.
