Mountain Lions take two from Jaguars to sweep PBC series

AUGUSTA, Ga. | Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball series from Augusta University Wednesday (April 19) afternoon at Jaguar Field.

The Mountain Lions won the opener 5-4 before dominating 8-2 in the nightcap. YHC improved to 18-26 overall and 10-14 in the Peach Belt, while Augusta fell to 17-25 and 4-20. Young Harris returns to the YHC Softball Field Saturday (April 22) for a 1 p.m. PBC doubleheader against No. 24 Columbus State University. Prior to the doubleheader, the Mountain Lions will honor their five seniors.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

GAME 1
  • Hannah Carey's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning gave the Mountain Lions the 5-4 lead. Erin Chambliss started the inning with a bunt single and moved up to second on an error on a Bailee Brown grounder. They both moved up a base on a ground out from Grace Young before Carey's fly to right field.
  • The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 4-2 lead through two innings as they scored two runs in each inning. Carey had an RBI through the right side and Gracie Hughes added a sacrifice fly in the first. Hannah Rizzuto and Chambliss each hit solo homers in the second. Rizzuto's sixth homer went down the left field line, while Chambliss' first homer of 2023 went to left-center field.
  • Augusta tied the game at 4 in the third inning on Lauren Barrett's two-run double. It would stay that way until the seventh.
  • Jill Dixon (4-3) earned the win in the circle with two scoreless innings.
  • Young and Chambliss each had two hits as YHC had nine in the game.
GAME 2
  • The Mountain Lions scored three runs in both the second and fifth innings, and added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
  • Chambliss had a two-run double to center and added another run in the second.
  • Shelby Duncan ground in two runs on a grounder and Rizzuto added a RBI single to left field in the fifth inning.
  • Jess Jaruszewski drove in a run in the sixth on a single through the left side, while Chambliss added an RBI single to left in the seventh.
  • Kylie Ferguson (7-13) earned the win, allowing one run and four hits in five innings.
  • The Mountain Lions had 13 hits in the nightcaps, including five doubles (Hughes, Shea Bayreuther, Rizzuto, Amber Divine and Chambliss).
  • Young, Duncan, Rizzuto, and Chamblis had two hits each for Young Harris.
