No. 25/22 Mountain Lions move into first place in Peach Belt with sweep over USCB

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. | The Young Harris College baseball team collected 34 hits as the Mountain Lions swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from the University of South Carolina-Beaufort Saturday (April 15) afternoon at the Richard Gray Sports Complex.

The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 25 in Collegiate Baseball poll and No. 22 in the NCBWA poll, improved to 32-11 overall and moved into first place in the Peach Belt with a 20-6 mark after beating the Sand Sharks 14-2 (seven innings) and 21-7. USCB fell to 12-25 and 5-18. The teams will wrap up their weekend series with an 11 a.m. contest Sunday (April 16).

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES:

GAME 1
  • The Mountain Lions took control of the opener with six runs in the first inning.
  • Nate Lamb (7-0) earned the win, allowing a run on three hits and six strikeouts.
  • Every starter had at least one hit with six players (Ethan Underwood, Jarrett Ford, Steven Spell, Jeremy Begora, Rome Wallace and Jace Wilson) recording two hits. The Mountain Lions finished with 15 hits.
  • Begora, Drew Bray and Wilson each drove in three runs.
  • YHC had five extra-base hits. Begora had a triple, while Dawson Barnes, Wallace, Bray and Wilson each had a double.
GAME 2
  • The Mountain Lions reeled off 14 unanswered runs after USC Beaufort tied the game at 7 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Young Harris knocked in nine runs in the seventh before adding five insurance runs in the ninth.
  • Dylan Beck (3-3) earned the win in relief as he pitched the final 3.2 innings allowing just one hit, while striking out eight.
  • Jackson Kemp hit two home runs in the nightcap. His three-run shot to left in the seventh as a pinch hitter gave the Mountain Lions a 10-7 lead. He added a two-run homer to left in the ninth. It was his fifth home run of the season.
  • Begora led the 13-hit attack with four hits, while James Basham and Underwood each had three more. 
  • Basham drove in three runs, while Underwood, Begora and Wallace had two RBI apiece.
  • Underwood clubbed two doubles, while Spell, Begora  and Bray had one each.
