YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College baseball team up an 8-1 series opening victory over Georgia Southwestern State University Friday (March 10) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 15-6 overall and to 7-3 inside the Peach Belt, while the Hurricanes fell to 9-7 and 6-4. The teams wrap up their weekend set with an 11 a.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 11).
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The Mountain Lions opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second. Steven Spell started the rally with a double to left field and later scored on Drew Bray's single up the middle. James Basham's sacrifice fly scored Bray.
- Spell stroked another double to start the fourth inning and later scored on Bray's ground out to give YHC a 3-0 lead.
- Young Harris took a 4-0 lead in the fifth. Marco Colina led off with single and scored on Jackson Kemp's double to right.
- After the Hurricanes got a run back in the seventh, the Mountain Lions put the game away with a four-run eighth inning. Spell and Basham drove in runs on a fielder's choice, while Rome Wallace added an RBI single through the left side.
- YHC posted 12 hits with Colina leading the way with three hits. Kemp, Spell, Bray and Jeremy Begora had two hits apiece.
- Starter Nate Lamb (5-0) earned the win as he scattered seven hits and struck out six over seven innings.
- Dylan Beck earned his second save of the season as pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
