Lander bests Young Harris

GREENWOOD, S.C. | Nigel Colvin and Jacob Cooper combined for 45 points as Lander University defeated Young Harris College 83-53 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Feb. 22) evening at Finis Horne Arena.

The Bearcats improved to 20-7 overall and to 12-5 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 19-8 and 9-8. Young Harris closes our the regular season Saturday (Feb. 25) at the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center as they host Georgia Southwestern State University in a 3:30 p.m. PBC contest. The Mountain Lions will honor their four seniors - Carter Berish, Josh Petteno, Lenny Pradia and Christian Schach - prior to the game.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Young Harris is ranked No. 7 in the Southeast region in the second set of NCAA Division II regional rankings that were release earlier in the day. Eight teams will be chosen from each of the eight regions. In the Southeast, the winners from the Peach Belt, South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas tournaments earn automatic berths while the other five teams will be at-large selections. Selections to the national tournament will be announced March 5 at 11 p.m.
  • YHC took a 5-3 lead after a Karl Chavis dunk less than two minutes into the game; however, Lander broke the game open with a 21-3 run over the next 12 minutes to take a 24-8 lead after a Tommy Moore three-pointer.
  • The Mountain Lions fought back to within a point (37-36) after a Turahn Thompson jumper with 16:21 left in the second half.
  • Lander used a 34-12 run over the next 12 minutes to open up a 74-48 lead after Colvin three-pointer.
  • Eden Davis led the Mountain Lions with 15 points and Thompson added 12 more.
  • Pradia added eight points and collected six assists, while Chavis posted eight points and six rebounds.
