Storm takes two from Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Lake Erie College took both ends of a softball doubleheader from Young Harris College Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon to spoil the Mountain Lions' home opener at the YHC Softball Field.

The Storm improved to 2-0 after wins of 6-3 and 8-7, while the Mountain Lions fell to 5-7. Young Harris opens Peach Belt Conference action next Saturday (Feb. 25) with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the University of South Carolina-Aiken in Aiken, South Carolina.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES:

GAME 1
  • Four of the six runs scored by Lake Erie were unearned.
  • LEC starter Grace Hammer (1-0) struck out 14 in the complete-game effort. 
  • The Mountain Lions collected 11 hits, but stranded 12 runners on base.
  • Trinity Aycock led the way with three hits, while Grace Young and Hannah Rizzuto each collected two hits.
  • Young laced her first homer of the season to right-center field in the third.
  • Shea Bayreuther and Rizzuto has had extra-base hits for YHC with a double apiece.
  • Addie Heal added a RBI single in the fourth inning, while Hannah Carey drove in a run in the sixth with a single.
  • Kylie Ferguson (2-3) absorbed the loss.
  • Reliever Kaliyah Smith didn't allow an earned run in 3.2 innings and struck out seven.
GAME 2
  • The teams combined for 15 runs and 24 hits in the nightcap.
  • Lake Erie broke a 7-all game in the top of the seventh C.J. Garcia's leadoff homer to straightaway center field off Smith (0-1), who pitched the final four innings for the Mountain Lions.
  • YHC tallied 11 hits, led by three hits from Bailee Brown and two more from Young.
  • Young had her second homer of the doubleheader - a two-run shot to right-center field in the bottom of the first. 
  • Aubrey Bourrie had an RBI triple in the bottom of the second.
  • Brown, Young and Rizzuto each recorded doubles for the Mountain Lions.
