DAHLONEGA, Ga. | Cayden Charles' layup at the buzzer gave No. 18 University of North Georgia an 80-78 win over Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Jan. 25) evening at Lynn Cottrell Arena inside the UNG Convocation Center.
The Nighthawks improved to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 14-4 and 5-4. YHC will travel to Americus, Georgia, Saturday (Jan. 28) for a 7:30 p.m. PBC game against Georgia Southwestern State University.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The game was a see-saw affair as there were 12 lead changes and the game was tied six times.
- After Frank Champion hit a layup to give the Nighthawks their largest lead of the game - six points (75-69), the Mountain Lions mounted their comeback. Lenny Pradia hit four consecutive free throws to pull YHC within two points (75-73) with 3:06 to go.
- Karl Chavis followed with two more free throws 30 seconds later to tie the game at 75.
- Champion gave the lead back for UNG at 77-75 on a layup with 70 seconds to play, but Christian Schach swished a three-pointer to give YHC a 78-77 lead with 56 seconds left.
- On UNG's next possession, Champion was fouled, but only made one of the two free throws to tie the game at 78 with 34 seconds remaining.
- Schach attempted to give the Mountain Lions lead on their next possession, but Greg Billups, Jr., blocked his layup with five seconds left. Hunter Shedenheim grabbed the defensive rebound and got the ball to Charles, who sank the winning layup as the horn sounded.
- Young Harris led by as many as eight points (31-23) in the first half as the Mountain Lions were scorching hot from outside, hitting 11 of its 13 three-pointers (84.6 percent) in the opening 20 minutes.
- The Mountain Lions finished with 14 three-pointers, led by five from Nate Dunlop and three each from Josh Petteno and Schach.
- Dunlop led the Mountain Lions with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Pradia and Petteno added 13 apiece. Petteno went 5-of-8 from the floor and had a team-high six rebounds, while Pradia registered four assists.
- Schach and Karl Chavis finished with nine points.
