COLUMBUS, Ga. | Young Harris College jumped out to a 10-run lead en route to 10-6 victory over Georgia College in the winner's bracket of the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament Saturday (May 14) morning at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.
The Mountain Lions (37-17), who are the tournament's No. 4 seed, won their program-best (NCAA era) 37th game of the campaign, surpassing the win total of the 2019 and 2012 squads. Young Harris will advance to its second PBC Tournament final at 11 a.m. Sunday (May 15) where they will either face Georgia College (33-19), Georgia Southwestern State University or Columbus State University. The Mountain Lions won the tournament in their other appearance in 2019.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 in the first inning on an RBI single to right-center field off the bat of Rome Wallace.
- YHC doubled its lead two innings later on a run-scoring single to left.
- Young Harris broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Ethan Underwood drove in the first two runs as he singled through the right side before Noah Fitzgerald stroked his third homer - a three-run shot to left field - of the tournament. It was Fitzgerald's 10th homer of 2022.
- The Mountain Lions made the score 10-0 with a three-run fifth inning. Kyle Ayers added a RBI double to left and Underwood drove in two more with a single to left field.
- Georgia College made the game close as they scored six runs over the final three innings.
- McLain Harris (10-4) earned the win as he allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Cole Edwards earned his second save of the year by retiring the only batter he faced.
- Underwood collect three hits, while Mark Castle and Ayers had two hits apiece.
- Underwood also led the Mountain Lions with 4 RBI, while Fitzgerald accounted for three more.
