COLUMBUS, Ga. | The Young Harris College softball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Columbus State University Saturday (April 9) at Cougar Field.
Young Harris fell 9-6 in game one, and took a 3-1 victory in game two.
YHC improved to 17-16 overall and 8-9 in the Peach Belt, while CSU fell to 19-18 and 9-5. The Mountain Lions and the Cougars wrap up the series Sunday (April 10) with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
GAME ONE
- Columbus State took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off two hits and a sacrifice flyout.
- The Cougars added a run in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
- YHC scored three runs in the third to cut the deficit to 4-3. Shea Bayreuther roped a double that scored Kenzie Chappell and Morgan Curley hit a long ball to opposite field -her fourth of the season- to score Bayreuther.
- The Mountain Lions tied the game at four in the fourth off a bases loaded walk drawn by Chappell, and took a 6-4 lead off a Curley double to left center that scored Jillian Vitamanti and Erin Chambliss.
- The Cougars scored its final runs to win the game 9-6 off a three-run home run from Hannah Rose Corbin in the fourth, and a two-run home run from Morgan Elston in the fifth.
- YHC totaled 11 hits. Chappell led with three, Curley and Ashley Autuori had two apiece, while Bayreuther, Trinity Aycock, Amber Divine, and Vitamanti each had one.
- Kylie Ferguson (5-5) recorded the loss for Young Harris.
GAME TWO
- Game two was scoreless through four innings.
- Chappell led off the Mountain Lion fifth with a single to left field. Chappell advanced to third on a steal -off a Cougar throwing error by the catcher- and came around to score on a Bayreuther sacrifice flyout.
- CSU tied the game up at one in the sixth off an infield single from Caitlyn Canady.
- Curley gave YHC the 3-1 lead in the sixth off a home run to right center -her fifth of the season- and second of the day.
- Brookelyn Sweeney pitched five innings and scattered only four hits. Sweeney held the Cougar offense to zero runs through four innings, and gave up the solo CSU run in the sixth.
- Sam Davis (5-3) earned the win for YHC. Davis entered the game in the sixth, allowed two hits and struck out four.
