WINGATE, N.C. | Young Harris College had its best ever performance at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship Saturday (Nov. 7) morning hosted by Wingate University at the Wingate Cross Country Facility.
The Mountain Lions not only saw their best-ever team finish - ninth - at the meet, but saw a runner qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships Nov. 21 in Joplin, Missouri.
Young Harris came in ninth place out of 27 teams in the 6K meet with 284 points.
Freshman
Nancy Murgor, who won the Peach Belt Conference title two weeks ago, finished in second place out of the 182 runners with a time of 22:45.1 on the wet, sloppy course that had be inundated with rain over the past week. She was the top harrier not on one of the three advancing teams to earn one of the region's individual berths.
Murgor and
Nicole Smith were named the USTFCCCA's NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region team by virtue of their top 25 finish. Smith, a four-time All-Peach Belt Conference performer, completed her final collegiate competition with a time of 24:11.8, good for 21st place.
Ciara Wood finished in 67th overall with a time of 25:46.6 and was followed by Jessie Farmer (95th, 26:23.2),
Rachel Boulineau (114th, 27:01.1),
